Applications have been opened for environmental education grants with the state Department of Environmental Quality.

Public or private school teachers and youth organization group leaders are encouraged to apply for the grants, which range from $100 to $1,000. Proposed projects must focus on environmental education, directly involve students, be linked to classroom learning objectives, and be completed by the end of the next school year.

Full Grant Terms and FAQs can be found here.

Project categories range from composting and recycling to revitalizing outdoor classrooms and edible gardens, among others.

Past projects include hydroponic and aquaponic gardens, nature trail improvements, rain barrels, edible forests and pollinator gardens. The Comanche Middle School even used its grant to test reservoir water quality and study fish populations, according to a DEQ spokesperson.

The deadline for applying on the DEQ website is December 1 and funds are awarded in January.
