Namibia is moving on a path of environmental education


The executive director of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism says the ministry views environmental education (EE) and education for sustainable development (ESD) as tools to support environmental protection and conservation of biodiversity in Namibia.

Teofilus Nghitila made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by the deputy director of multilateral environmental agreements at the ministry, Peter Muteyauli, during a two-day national consultative workshop on the national strategy and action plan. for the implementation of the EE / ESD Policy for Namibia, recently held in Windhoek.

Nghitila said the ministry is the coordinator of environmental issues in the country and therefore sees EE / ESD as a vehicle for environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.

Nghitila said the ministry has a functional environmental education awareness program to raise awareness of environmental issues.

The main objective of this program is to develop environmental skills and change the attitudes of our citizens towards sustainable production and consumption, ”said Nghitila.

The EE / EDD policy (2022-2026) was launched last year and its implementation is led by the EE / EDD working group, whose overall objective is to promote the implementation of the EE / EDD policy. EE / EDD, to help mobilize financial resources and develop strategic partnerships with major environmental and sustainable organizations.

The specific objectives of the workshop were to gather the contributions of the stakeholders, to take stock of past, existing and planned activities in all the sectors concerned, to define the strategy and the action plan of the policy.

Waldo Junius of the Namibian National Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) said Namibia is a key player in the field of EE / ESD and is one of the only two countries to have EE / ESD policies in place.

Education for sustainable development is defined as education that encourages changes in knowledge, skills, values ​​and attitudes to enable a more sustainable and just society for all.

It aims to empower and equip current and future generations to meet their needs using a balanced and integrated approach to the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
